Customizing Premium Reports: Adding Fields and Filters

Pre-built reports in Premium Reporting show a standard set of data — but you can customize them to show exactly what you need. This article covers how to add or remove data columns and how to add, edit, and remove filters, all from within an Explore.

Adding Data Fields (Columns)

  1. Go to Premium Reporting and open the report you want to customize.
  2. In the left-hand panel, use the Search bar to find a field, or browse All Fields to see everything available.
  3. To see which fields are already included in the report, switch to the In Use tab.
  4. Click a field name to add it — fields selected for the report will be highlighted in grey.
  5. Click Run to update the report with your new columns.

Adding a Filter

Filters let you narrow your data down — for example, showing only "Credit Card" transactions or clients from a specific city.

  1. In the left-hand panel, find the field you want to filter by using the Search bar or the In Use / All Fields tabs.
  2. Hover over the field name and click the Filter icon (a funnel symbol with a + sign).
  3. The field will appear in the Filters section at the top of the report.
  4. Use the dropdown menus to set your rule — for example: Payment Method > is equal to > Credit Card.
  5. Click Run to apply the filter.

Note - When filtering by a date range, Looker uses "until (before)" logic for the end date — meaning it goes up to but does not include that date. For example, to capture all of May, set your range to 2024-05-01 until (before) 2024-06-01. If you set the end date to May 31, you may miss data from that day.

Editing a Filter

If a pre-built report is almost right but the filter criteria need adjusting — for example, it shows the last 7 days but you want the last 30 — you can edit the filter directly.

  1. Locate the Filters section at the top of the report. Click the arrow to expand it if it's collapsed.
  2. Click the first dropdown next to the filter to change the rule type (e.g., change is equal to to contains, or is in the past to is in range).
  3. Click the second box to enter or update the value (e.g., change 7 to 30, or enter specific dates).
  4. Click Run to refresh the report.

Example: To change a date filter from the last 7 days to the last 30 days — click the value box next to is in the past and change 7 to 30, then click Run.

Removing a Filter

  1. Locate the Filters section at the top of the report.
  2. Click the X next to the filter you want to remove.
  3. Click Run to refresh the report.

Saving Your Customized Report

Explores are temporary — once you navigate away, your changes won't be saved automatically. To keep your customized report for future use:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select Save > As a Look.
  3. Save it to your Personal Folder.

Your saved Look will be available any time you return to Premium Reporting.

Note - Any changes you make in an Explore are temporary until you save them. You won't affect any pre-built reports or other users by experimenting here.
