Navigation
Once you signed in, you will enter into this welcome page for Premium Reporting powered by Looker.
From here, you will notice the familiar terms of Clients & Staff and Financial as well as some new ones: Explores and Personal Folder. The options you can see here is based on the permissions allowed via reporting. By default, owners can see both Clients & Staff and Financial reports. Managers can only see Clients & Staff reports. Staff members and limited staff members won't have access to reporting. But this permission setting can be overwritten in the staff profile page.
In Looker, content is saved into Folders. Folders can include Looks and Dashboards.
The Looks and Dashboards nested under Clients & Staff or Financial are pre-configured and cannot be modified. However, you may create Dashboards from the Explores functionality to be stored in a Personal Folder.
One of the best ways to begin using Looker is to navigate around the existing folders to see what content already exists.
For this, we will examine the Clients & Staff and Financial folders for the data they contain. In Looker, there are two main types of content - Looks and Dashboards.
- Looks are saved reports. They can display data through a chart, table, map, or other visualizations.
- Dashboards are spaces containing a collection of data visualizations displayed as tiles together on a single page.
Examine Looks
Looks are equivalent to your Favorites or the pre-configured Quick Views in Reporting under various sub-categories within the Clients & Staff or Financial reporting categories.
- Select the Clients & Staff folder to access the related Looks.
- Let's examine Active Plans as an example.
- Once you open the Look, you can see the data. It can be stored as a data table, a chart, a map, or other visualizations. In our example, this is a table view with multiple dimensions (blue columns) and measures (orange columns). We also have a Total row in the table view.
- For a table view, you can click on the column to order the data.
- You can also hover over the column header to see the column definition.
Looks are created and saved following queries in Explores, so to edit the filters configured for Looks, you must Explore from Here. This is accessible from the gear menu in the upper right of the Look.
You are free to investigate Explores at this time, however, we will discuss them further later.
Examine Dashboards
Select the Clients & Staff folder to see several related dashboards. Dashboards are similar to the Insights Dashboard in Pike13’s Analytics & Reporting. Both display data in tiles on a single page, though the types of visualizations are more varied in Looker.
- Let's examine the Client Insights dashboard as an example.
- In the upper right, we can see how recently the data was pulled for the dashboard.
- The default filters on top are set by the creator of the dashboard. But you can change them and hit the "Run" button to get the data for different filters.
- You can hover over the charts to gain additional insights.
The Dashboards nested under Clients & Staff or Financial are pre-configured and cannot be re-configured. However, you may create Dashboards from the Explores functionality to be stored in a Personal Folder. More on this advanced level of functionality in later articles.
Explore
An Explore is a starting point for a question regarding a specific category of data in your Pike13 site. We have Explores for Clients & Staff and Financial content.
- Click on the subject you want to explore, for example, Enrollments, and then you'll see all the data related to enrollments.
- Now, you can add the dimensions and measures you want to include in your report.
- You can limit the data by applying some filters.
- To visualize the data differently, you can change the visualization type.
Here are some basic actions for exploring data. To learn more, check this article.
